Consumer Expenditure Survey 2004

Beginning in 1974, Statistics Norway (SSB) has conducted yearly comsumer expenditure surveys. Pre-1974, nationwide consumer expenditure surveys was carried out in 1958, 1967 og 1973. The main purpose of the surveys has been to give a detailed overview of the expenditures of private households, providing the basis for updates of the weight basus of the consumer price index. Furthermore, the attention has been on maping the consumption and expenditures of different household types. Households are classified by variables such as houshold type (new standard), income, socio-economic status, geographic region and residential area, size of consuption expenditures, etc.

The State Administration utilize the data from the Consumer Expenditure Survey in their planning and investigative work. This provides the foundation for decisions and estimates for the years to come. The results from the survey are also used by the National nutrition and physical education council in an ongoing monitoring of the development of the Norwegian diet.

The Consumer Expenditure Survey is conducted as a part of the state assignment, and Division for social welfare statistics at Statistics Norway is the responsible unit. Divison for interviews conducts the data collection. There is an energy addition in the Consumer Expenditure Survey 2004, conducted on behalf of the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy.
