Synapsis and crossover between chromosomes during meiosis is essential for maintaining fertility of plants, and is particularly important in grain crops such as wheat. DMC1-D1 is responsible for maintenance of synapsis and crossover at low and, to a certain extent, high temperatures. Given that reduction in crossover will have an impact on grain yield, these results have important implications for wheat breeding, particularly in the face of climate change.
