Title: Nature-based Solutions for Water Resilience in Thriving European Urban Areas Abstract: Characterised by rising populations, consumption rates and persistent inequalities, cities are central to transformative economic and social development models. Traditional engineering approaches often fall short, revealing inefficiencies and vulnerabilities. The current trend emphasises urban adaptation and resilience through sustainable strategies that ensure a steady water supply while promoting ecological balance. This study identifies Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for water-sensitive European cities. Examining 77 projects in 46 cities, including interventions at three spatial scales, the paper highlights the importance of blue infrastructure and green space techniques. By improving flood protection, water quality and stormwater management, these strategies effectively mitigate the impacts of urban development, which is particularly relevant in Mediterranean countries facing water scarcity and more frequent extreme weather events. In summary, this study advocates a paradigm shift towards NbS to comprehensively address urban water challenges, promote sustainability and strengthen urban resilience in the face of escalating environmental pressures.
