The Pacific herring population in Prince William Sound Alaska collapsed in 1993 following the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 and viral epizootic. This population has failed to recover in the nearly three decades since the spill and subsequent collapse. We are collecting whole-genome sequence data from populations through time (1991 to 2017) in Prince William Sound, and from two additional Alaska regions as references, to offer clues into the causes and consequences of this collapse. We are also collecting population genomics data from throughout the species range to provide context for genomic change through time and between regions.
