资源简介:
This collection consists of images, spreadsheets, reports, GIS and site record data from archaeological assessments by Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA). Work occurred at Watermark West Quay, Southampton, Hampshire between 2013 and 2016. The first watching brief on geotechnical boreholes and trial pits successfully identified the stratigraphic sequence from ground surface to depths of 35m or 50m below ground level. Pleistocene (Ice Age) river gravels, alluvial deposits and marshland peats were recorded at various locations. A separate geoarchaeological evaluation of two rotary boreholes recovered a suite of environmental samples from the varied alluvial sequences recorded across the site underwent post-excavation assessment. In the second watching brief Tidal mudflats were located on site and driven into the mudflats were a series of timber posts, parallel to the City wall forming solid structure(s) built out to the west of the town wall. Reused moulded stone fragments were found within the walls. The remains of an early 19th century pier and associated reclamation dumps, abutting the town walls were found at the northern end of the site.
