Variation in DNA methylation between individuals is influenced by genetic and environmental factors, but their relative impact is largely unknown. Whole-genome, high-resolution methylation analysis in two mouse strains revealed striking differences in the global distribution of DNA methylation specifically at CpG island promoters and first exons. Interbreeding and cross-fostering experiments identified a maternal origin of these effects.
