Streptoccus suis infected the same patient 8 years apart. Genomic analyses and substitution rate estimation suggest the reinfection was caused by highly similar, but unrelated strains circulating in the Netherlands. Continuous occupational re-exposure is therefore likely responsible for the second infection, but underlying immuno-deficiencies could not be ruled out.
