Kija Rangers R4/P1 - Warmun Aboriginal Community, WA - Gouldian Finch protection

Fire and weeds are currently the two greatest threats to Kija country. The Gouldian Finch and Purple-crowned Fairy-wren are under threat due to a loss of habitat, brought about by altered fire regimes. This project will work with partners to conduct prescribed burning operations in the East Kimberley. The project will then work to establish a bird monitoring program during the late dry and wet season, in combination with an annual assessment of habitat conditions of fire sensitive vegetation in the project area. Ensuring that the spread of invasive weeds is managed and contained will complement efforts to correct the fire regime. The range of activities outlined will ensure that traditional owners are on country, looking after it.
