Abstract

The impact assessment measured the impact of the curriculum and schools' program and the skills and career development program.
The assessment was conducted on students currently in our network and who have been in the program for more than 2 years and students who have been in our network and are no longer with us (Alumni).
In order to ensure that the impact being measured was attributed to the program, we used the randomized control trial where we identified a comparison group (control group) that was as identical in observable and unobservable dimensions as possible, to those receiving the program (treatment group). The impact assessment was measured using survey and focus group discussion tools.
80% of the students shared that they enjoyed that Fundi Bots robotics classes exposed them to building of robots. One student excitedly shared,” I can do it! Fundi Bots has made me believe that I can create something with my own hands!” Another student expressed how the classes had improved on his concentration in his classes because during the robotics classes, the students are trained to focus on a task for as long as it takes them to complete it. Not only are the students learning but they are also having fun doing it.
10% of the students stated that the robotics classes have improved on their understanding of different aspects of science. A student stated.” Science was a mystery and I just accepted what people around me said about science but with Fundi Bots, science has been demystified. For the first time I saw how electronic components work. This was during the first lesson.” Students shared experiences like; “I didn't have much love for science but as I did the robotics classes, I began to research more about electronics and programming and now I find it interesting”.
Not only do the students enjoy the robotics classes due to the hands-on approach we employ but they are also learning soft skills which will enable them to thrive and survive in the 21st century. The students shared that they have learned leadership, team work and collaboration which comes out of the students working together in teams. In addition, the students said they are more resilient and focused on their goals because they are given tasks to accomplish in a set time using their own hands which they must be able to complete in a given time. Two senior students from one of the schools designed a smart car and smart house which earned them a gold medal at the national student's convention. They shared how the electronics and programming knowledge gained from Fundi Bots classes enabled them to come up with the concept of the project and design these projects.
