Nanotechnologyhasbecomeoneofthedefiningideasinglobalresearchanddevelopment(R&D)overthelastdecade.In2001,theNationalNanotechnologyInitiative(NNI)wasestablishedastheU.S.governmentinteragencyprogramforcoordinatingnanotechnologyR&Damongfederalagenciesandfacilitatingcommunicationandcollaborativeactivitiesinnanoscalescience,engineering,andtechnologythroughoutthefederalgovernment.TheNNIdefinesnanotechnologyonitsWebsite1as“science,engineering,andtechnologyconductedatthenanoscale,whichisabout1to100nanometers.”2TheNNIfocusesonfourgoalsaimedatcreating“afutureinwhichtheabilitytounderstandandcontrolmatteratthenanoscaleleadstoarevolutionintechnologyandindustrythatbenefitssociety.”The26federalagenciesthatparticipateintheNNIcollaborateto(1)advanceworld-classnanotechnologyresearchanddevelopment,(2)fosterthetransferofnewtechnologiesintoproductsforcommercialandpublicbenefit,(3)developandsustaineducationalresources,askilledworkforce,andthesupportinginfrastructureandtoolstoadvancenanotechnology,and(4)supporttheresponsibledevelopmentofnanotechnology.
