This study investigates a novel approach to characterize underground gas reservoir microbiomes. We developed and tested a low-cost in situ biosampling device that enables separation of reservoir-associated microbial signals from wellbore- and operation-related effects that commonly bias conventional fluid-based sampling. The approach is designed to improve microbiological monitoring of underground hydrogen storage and related subsurface energy technologies, where reliable detection of native microbial processes is critical for assessing system stability and performance. Sequencing was performed at the Joint Microbiome Facility of the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Vienna under the project IDs JMF-2412-08 and JMF-2501-18.
