It lists the 11 known pelagic Southern Ocean species and with illustrated diagrams provides a guide to their taxonomic identification and distribution.Taken from the abstract:Eleven species of pelagic nemerteans have been reported from the Southern Ocean. These are Korotkevitsch pelagicus (Korotkevitsch), Nectonemertes mirabilis (Verrill), N. compacta (Korotkevitsch), Pelagonemertes parvula (Korotkevitsch), P. rollestoni (Moseley), Obnemertes ramosa (Korotkevitsch), O. maximovi (Korotkevitsch), O. latilobata (Korotkevitsch), O. solida (Korotkevitsch), O. nana (Korotkevitsch), and Protopelagonemertes hubrechti (Brinkman). The diagnostic characters of each is given together with a distribution map and a diagram Keys are given to the families, genera and species of pelagic nemerteans from the Southern Ocean and adjacent waters.Nemerteans, popularly known as ribbon worms, are characterised by elongated, soft, extensible bodies. They have an eversible muscular proboscis which is used in capturing prey.
