A holistic view of insects is necessary to understand their biology. Insects are not autonomous entities but rather biomolecular networks composed of the host and its associated microbes, the so-called holobiont. The genomes of the phytoplasma insect vector Euscelidius variegatus and its associated microbes have been sequenced to explore the role of the microbiome in the host biology and pathogen transmission.
