ICE-CLIMATE INTERACTIONS AND GLACIER DYNAMICS ON ANTARCTIC PENINSULA AND SOUTHERN PATAGONIA-INTERACCI�N HIELO-CLIMA Y DIN�MICA DE GLACIARES EN PEN�NSULA ANT�RTICA Y PATAGONIA AUSTRAL

The ice masses of the Antarctic Peninsula have been subject to significant changes during the recent decades, with the dramatic disintegration of sections of the Larsen Ice Shelf and the drastic reduction in the extent and volume of glaciers. There is clear evidence of considerable glacier retreat on Hielo Patag�nico Sur, southern Patagonia. The changes in the Antarctic Peninsula are associated with the pronounced regional atmospheric warming, which is expected to be detected also in the region of the Patagonian glaciers. A proper assessment of the impact of these changes to the environment is seriously affected by the lack of basic glaciological data from long term monitoring programmes. The aim of the project is to monitor climatic change in both regions and to assess its impact on glaciers in areas considered in this study, to investigate the calving processes, and to improve the knowledge of the impact of the removal of ice shelves on the dynamics of tributary glaciers. Collection of glaciological, meteorological, limnological, and paleoclimatic data will continue for study of ice-climate interactions. The systematic monitoring of glacial areas will be complemented by remote sensing. The project is in part the continuation of previous studies which will provide a valuable glacioclimatic database for both regions.

Las masas de hielo en pen�nsula Ant�rtica sufrieron cambios muy significativos durante d�cadas recientes, como la dram�tica desintegraci�n de sectores de Barrera de Hielo Larsen y la dr�stica reducci�n en extensi�n y volumen de los glaciares. Existen claras evidencias del notorio retroceso glaciar en Hielo Patag�nico Sur, Patagonia Austral. Los cambios en pen�nsula Ant�rtica est�n asociados al pronunciado calentamiento atmosf�rico y se intentar� detectar la existencia del mismo en la region de glaciares Patag�nicos. Una correcta evaluaci�n del impacto de estos cambios en medioambiente est� seriamente afectada por falta de datos glaciol�gicos b�sicos, que resultan de programas de monitoreo a largo plazo. El objetivo del proyecto es monitorear el cambio clim�tico en ambas regiones y evaluar el impacto del mismo en glaciares de zonas consideradas en este estudio, investigar los procesos de desprendimiento, y mejorar el conocimiento del impacto producido por remoci�n de barreras de hielo en la din�mica de sus glaciares tributarios. Se continuar� recolectando datos glaciol�gicos, meteorol�gicos, limnol�gicos y paleoclim�ticos para estudios de interacci�n hielo-clima. El monitoreo sistem�tico de zonas englazadas se complementar� con sensores remotos. El proyecto es continuaci�n parcial de estudios anteriores que permiten contar con una valiosa base de datos glacio-clim�ticos de ambas regiones.
