This study reveals that soil cyanobacteria, including Nostoc sp. HNIBRCY4, produce 2-MIB compounds, which can be washed into freshwater sources during rainfall. The odor-producing cyanobacteria, along with their byproducts, can be flexible enough to adapt to environmental changes from terrestrial to aquatic systems. The results showed that 2-MIB production increased significantly under autotrophic conditions, suggesting that soil cyanobacteria can survive and produce 2-MIB at higher levels than mixotrophic conditions.
