The Wave Propagation Laboratory (WPL) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Environmental Research Laboratories has completed the Phase I investigation of the feasibility of measuring global atmospheric wind fields using a satellite-borne coherent lidar system. The investigation used detailed analytical and physical models to simulate the wind-measurement process. NOAA-DMSP objectives and requirements, and the operational space environment were considered. Coherent lidar systems were shown to be capable of measuring the global wind field.
