Gender Analysis of Anxiety and Occupational Aspiration In Undergraduate Students

Abstract Undergraduates represent a population, that has just left the protected environment of school life and entered college, where they face anxiety for a variety of reasons, including their future occupation. Hence it becomes very important to know their anxiety level and level of their occupational aspiration. They are our future generation. Gender disparity, especially in India, is a raging topic of discussion today, with infanticide, foeticide, dowry, etc. creating a divide between girls and boys. This paper, explores the anxiety level and occupational level of undergraduate boys and girls, from the gender perspective. In a sample of 1-00 undergraduates, there were 40 girls and 60 boys. Purposive sampling was used and the boy - girl ratio, depended upon their availability. Tools used were an anxiety scale and an occupational aspiration scale, to measure the anxiety level and occupational aspiration level, respectively.The percentage analysis of the result, showed that, among the male students, the highest % was of average occupational aspiration. On the anxiety level, the highest % was of high anxiety. Among the female students, again the highest % was of average occupational aspiration .Unlike the males, they showed a very high % of normal anxiety. Implications of the results have been discussed.
