This Vegetation Photosynthesis and Respiration Model (VPRM) run was used to assess the carbon impacts of representing turfgrass as a separate plant functional type (PFT). This turfgrass plant functional type was created using eddy covariance data collected over turfgrass fields. The model domain is 87x87km2, centered around Indianapolis, IN. Model outputs are carbon dioxide fluxes, and the VPRM model is commonly used as a biological prior in an inversion model framework. Using the new turfgrass PFT, we can capture observed photosynthetic drawdowns in the winter months at these turfgrass lawns and, more accurately, simulate the phenological carbon impacts. This work was conducted in association with the INFLUX project.
