The five surviving volumes of the Minute Books record matters discussed and decisions taken at the regular monthly meetings of the Committee of the Newcastle and Northumberland Benevolent Society, administering, inter alia, the Newcastle Benevolent Hospital (name subsequently changed to the Newcastle Western Suburbs Hospital). Each meeting's record commences with the names of those in attendance, and of those who have sent apologies for non-attendance, and is countersigned by the Chairman in confirmation that it has been accepted as a true and accurate record at the meeting next following. These volumes are, for the most part, handwritten, but in some instances newspaper accounts of the proceedings of meetings (particularly the text of reports presented in full) have been pasted in.
