*No of spirochetes is significantly higher (P<0.001, Mann-Whitney test all patients, P = 0.04 for PCR+ patients) in culture+versus culture – biopsies. a3 cultures became contaminated, (2 PCR positive and 1 PCR negative), hence 118 samples could be evaluated by culture.
