Survey Dataset of the perceived conservation of the Mediterranean Monk Seal in Torrevieja coastal areas and its possible contribution to tourism activity

The Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) is one of the rarest mammal species in Europe. The species' estimated population is approximately 444-600 mature individuals, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Officially extinct in Spain´s mainland, the situation underscores the need for addressing biodiversity conservation efforts. To mitigate this challenge, the University of Alicante (UA) headquarters in Torrevieja, along with FauNatura association, the Department of the Environment of the Torrevieja City Council, and the Real Club Náutico Torrevieja organised the conference "Challenges and Opportunities for Biodiversity Conservation in Coastal Cities" that included a sensitization and awareness campaign. The campaign showcased realistic sculptures of the seal, and was held in different locations, It also contemplated a survey in Spanish and English to collect visitors’ perceptions of biodiversity and conservation of Torrevieja´s beaches. This data article sheds light on the study´s objectives, importance, and methodological approach. The main goal of the study is to evaluate the public perception of Torrevieja's biodiversity and beach conservation. It can also help destination agents to consider more conservation policies and strategies.
