Genomic representation gaps in Colombian bat diversity (Chiroptera) — dataset

Dataset associated with the manuscript "Only 25% of Colombian bat species have genomic representation: a bioinformatic assessment of Chiroptera sequences in public databases" (Melo Escobar, D.A., 2026, submitted to PeerJ). KEY FINDINGS:- 445 sequences from NCBI GenBank representing 56 valid species- 177 records from BOLD Systems representing 29 species- 57 species with genomic representation (25.7% of 222 recorded Colombian bat species)- 165 species with no sequence data in any public database (74.8%)- COI coverage index: 0.54 sequences per known species — second-lowest among eight Neotropical countries- 9 endemic bat species: none has any publicly available sequence data- 4 families entirely absent from both databases: Emballonuridae, Mormoopidae, Noctilionidae, Furipteridae- 42% of retrieved NCBI records carry non-Colombian collection localities (provenance bias documented)- 39% of confirmed Colombian records originate from Córdoba department DATASET CONTENTS:(1) Cleaned metadata tables from NCBI GenBank (445 records) and BOLD Systems (177 records)(2) Cross-database species coverage matrix (56 species with representation, 166 unrepresented, out of 222 Colombian bat species)(3) Geographic provenance analysis table (geo_loc_name field extracted from all GenBank records)(4) Multiple sequence alignments for cytochrome b (118 sequences, 40 species) and COI (110 sequences, 16 species) used for maximum likelihood phylogenetic inference with IQ-TREE 2 TAXONOMIC REFERENCE:Species richness based on Ramírez-Chaves et al. (2024) Mamíferos de Colombia v1.14, Sociedad Colombiana de Mastozoología via SiB Colombia. Endemic species following Ramírez-Chaves et al. (2020) and subsequent descriptions of Vampyressa voragine (Morales-Martínez et al., 2021) and Histiotus colombiae (Rodríguez-Posada et al., 2021). All sequences retrieved June 22, 2026.
