This dataset contains the inferior colliculus (IC) recordings that were used to characterize the neural code for music in Mouawad et al., 2025. The responses from 3 animals with normal hearing are in the Normal hearing folder. The responses from 3 animals with hearing loss are in the Hearing loss folder. The responses are stored as Matlab files. The names are Stems_seg1_c_x_x_x_<level>_<trial>_All_<date>, where level is the sound level at which the music was presented (in dB SPL), trial is the number of the presentation (1 or 2; all music was presented twice), and date is the animal identification number. Each response file contains a single uint8 variable of size 286125 x 6 x 512 (time bins x music types x recording sites). The six music types are bass, drums, vocals, other, mixture, and sum (see manuscript for details). Each value in the variable is a spike count in a time bin of width 32/24414.0625 s. The extras folder contains the best frequencies (BFs) for each of the recording sites (stored together for all animals with the same hearing status with animals organized in date order), as well as the indices of the non-silent segments for some music types (silent segments were excluded from some analyses, see manuscript for details; each response was divided into segments of 183105 time bins and the variable ix_keep contains the indices of the segments that were non-silent for bass, drums, vocals, and other).
