We will use RIXS to probe electronic structure changes induced by intertwined spin and charge density wave transitions in the Ruddlesden-Popper nickelates La4Ni3O10 and Pr4Ni3O10 and square-planar nickelate La4Ni3O8. These nickelates are proximate to superconducting transitions, highlighting the complex and poorly understood relationship between density wave and superconducting phases. Our measurements will determine the microscopic electronic changes governing the balance between superconductivity and other instabilities.
