Designing Functional Polymers and Materials from Lignin-derived Molecules

In line with the current global efforts towards the utilization of bio-based products, lignin, an abundantly available biopolymer with an aromatic structure similar to petroleum compounds, has tremendous potential. However, the accompanying structural complexity, cost associated with the purification process of the lignin-derived chemicals and the lack of attractive application severely restrict the utilization of this versatile biopolymer. Hence, this Australian Research Council (ARC)-funded project aims to develop high-value functional material from lignin-derived molecules. Light-responsive polymers were designed for specialty applications, such as self-healing materials, photo-switchable adhesives and hydrophobic coating as a replacement for plastic coatings for food packaging applications.
