Temporal trends of emerging pollutant deposition through ice core sampling on the Devon Ice Cap

The NCP Blueprint (2015-16) for environmental monitoring and research clearly states a need for air data for persistent pollutants and emerging compounds in order to assess temporal trends and transport pathways. Trends into the future can be effectively captured by continued or new atmospheric monitoring. However, past temporal trends will not be described by this monitoring program, but can be monitored through precipitation records from remote ice caps. The trends captured in ice caps can be compared to known production changes to better understand long-range transport pathways. Furthermore, analysis of these samples can inform our understanding of the presence of emerging contaminants and their loadings to the Arctic terrestrial and aquatic environment.
