Ru(Ru(NO)2)2(N2Cl)2(N2OCl3)2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic Immm space group. The structure is one-dimensional and consists of two ruthenium molecules; four N2Cl clusters; four Ru(NO)2 clusters; and two N2OCl3 ribbons oriented in the (1, 0, 0) direction. In each N2Cl cluster, N+0.33+ is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one Cl1- atom. The N–Cl bond length is 1.57 Å. Cl1- is bonded in a distorted bent 120 degrees geometry to two equivalent N+0.33+ atoms. In each Ru(NO)2 cluster, Ru+5.33+ is bonded in a distorted tetrahedral geometry to two equivalent N+0.33+ and two equivalent O2- atoms. Both Ru–N bond lengths are 1.72 Å. Both Ru–O bond lengths are 1.82 Å. N+0.33+ is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to one Ru+5.33+ atom. O2- is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one Ru+5.33+ atom. In each N2OCl3 ribbon, N+0.33+ is bonded in an L-shaped geometry to two equivalent Cl1- atoms. Both N–Cl bond lengths are 1.80 Å. O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to one O2- and four Cl1- atoms. The O–O bond length is 1.22 Å. There are two shorter (2.93 Å) and two longer (2.94 Å) O–Cl bond lengths. There are two inequivalent Cl1- sites. In the first Cl1- site, Cl1- is bonded in a distorted L-shaped geometry to two equivalent N+0.33+ and one O2- atom. In the second Cl1- site, Cl1- is bonded in a distorted bent 150 degrees geometry to two equivalent O2- atoms.
