Since 2005 Pro Carton, the European Association of Cartonboard and Carton Manufacturers, maintains the "European Environmental Database for Cartonboard and Carton Production". This database contains gate-to-gate information of the European cartonboard and carton industry to the environment. The data are collected and processed by industry. The data represent the weighted averages of the inputs and outputs from the production sites per ton converted cartonboard sheet in the year 2008. Additives that contribute less than 0,5 % of the weight of the net saleable product are not included.

Technical Purpose: Folding cartons are small to medium sized “cardboard boxes” made from cartonboard. They are used to package a wide range of products from foodstuffs – such as cereals, frozen and chilled food, confectionary, bakery goods, tea, coffee and other dry foods – to pharmaceuticals, medical and
healthcare products, perfumes, cosmetics, toiletries, photographic products, clothing, cigarettes, toys, games, household an electrical, engineering, gardening and DIY (do it yourself) products.
Folding carton end use is 60% food and 40% non-foods in the European market.
