Name of Principal Investigator: Jenifer Dugan Institutional Affiliation: Marine Science Institute Names of Other PIs: David Hubbard, Wendy James, and Chad Soiseth, UC Santa Barbara Description: To test the general applicability of scaling patterns between density and body size to natural marie communities, we examined relationships between population density and wet weights in soft sediment intertidal infaunal communities in Carpinteria Salt Marsh and sandbeaches on Santa Rosa Island. Theory predicts that relationships between density and body size are inverse, i.e. large animals are less abundant than small animals. We found no relationship or weakly positive relationships in our study, in contrast to other studies of marine communities. Name of Principal Investigator: Henry M.
