Communication about periods by mothers of pre-menarche daughters: A qualitative study using a phenomenological approach.
The theme of communication explores the various challenges and concerns that mothers confront, particularly regarding discussions about menstruation with their daughters. Mothers with lower educational attainment demonstrated a lack of sufficient biological understanding of menstruation, which hindered their ability to answer their daughters' inquiries about the topic. Additionally, mothers, irrespective of their education level, reported difficulties in initiating conversations about reproduction. This discomfort also included uncertainty about how much information to share with their daughters, highlighting a common struggle across different backgrounds. Furthermore, mothers underscored the importance of self-care and menstrual hygiene while raising concerns about menstrual management in public places, particularly schools. They expressed worries about the safety and well-being of their menstruating daughters in various environments, adding another layer of complexity to the communication barriers surrounding menstruation.
