We established a low-DO OA process (0.4 ± 0.2 mg O2/L in the oxic phase) and optimized the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and sludge retention time (SRT) to attain long-term biological nitrogen removal from low chemical-oxygen-demand-to-nitrogen (COD/N) tropical wastewater. In addition, 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing were performed to investigate the functional microbial community structure of the sludge.
