What are the differences between ceftriaxone and cefotaxime regarding microbiota and intestinal carriage of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae?

The increasing global resistance due to extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producingEnterobacteriaceae is a major concern. Observational studies have suggested a lowerselection of these strains when ceftriaxone is substituted for cefotaxime. The objectiveof this work was to experimentally explain why based on apharmacokinetics/metagenomics hypothesis. Ceftriaxone appears to select a specific microbial community in a concentrationdependentway and substitution of ceftriaxone for cefotaxime could limit the selectionof extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae .
