The Chesapeake Bay watershed is a vibrant ecosystem rich in cultural significance and natural resources. However, the watershed has a history of impairment due to mercury, the primary cause of fish consumption advisories in the watershed. In support of the Chesapeake Bay Program's work to further characterize the occurrence and effects of mercury and other toxic contaminants, the U.S. Geological Survey, working with partners in the watershed, compiled mercury data for freshwater fishes to understand how mercury concentrations, and risk to consumers, varies. Since there is currently no coordinated mercury monitoring network for the watershed, this story map also includes a proposed framework to improve the collection and sharing of mercury data.
