Spatial patterns of strontium isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr) provide valuable information on geological and biogeochemical processes in aquatic systems. We present the first detailed isoscape of strontium isotope ratios in surface waters of the Amazon Basin.
This dataset was generated by interpolating data published in the literature and new samples collected in the region. The resulting isoscape can be used to:
-Infer the provenance of aquatic organisms: By analyzing the isotopic composition of calcified structures of fish and other organisms, it is possible to trace their areas of origin and migration within the watershed.
Understanding hydrogeological processes: The spatial variation of the 87Sr/86Sr ratio in surface water reflects the geological heterogeneity of the basin and can be used to investigate processes such as the mixing of groundwater and surface water, erosion and sediment transport.
-Assessing the influence of human activities: Strontium isoscape can serve as a tool for assessing the impact of activities such as mining and the construction of hydroelectric dams on the isotopic composition of waters and, consequently, on aquatic ecosystems.
The data available includes:
-87Sr/86Sr ratio values: Strontium isotope ratio values are displayed for each pixel.
-Digital isoscape model: Spatial representation of the variation in the 87Sr/86Sr ratio in the river basin.
