In the Red Sea, approximately 25 deep-sea brine pools represent some of the most extreme environments on earth: they are characterised by high salinity, high concentrations of heavy metals, and steep gradients. Previous studies showed that Red Sea brine pools harbour an unusual array of microorganisms, including some novel phyla specific to the brine pools that are part of a long-term study of halophilic microbiota (Antunes et al., 2011), the isolation and characterization of new extreme representative microbes from the brine-filled Deeps will significantly advance our understanding of the in situ metabolisms, energy producing processes and environmental adaptive activities in the distinctly harsh habitats. In this paper, we report on the isolation and characteristics of a novel halophilic archaeal strain SB9T from the Discovery deep brine pool that represents a novel species of a new genus within the family Halobacteriaceae. The genome sequence analysis of the haloarchaeal strain SB9 will provide us more information how to adapt to the harsh habitats.
