The high-pressure chemistry and physical properties of ternary halides Pt-Na-Cl and Au-Na-Cl are unknown. Our preliminary experiments indicate that at a moderate pressure range (up to ~60 GPa) platinum reacts with NaCl and CCl4 to form a novel Na2PtCl5 compound containing linear chains of Pt and Cl atoms with unprecedently short Pt-Pt and Cl-Cl contacts. Our experimental observations and theoretical calculations suggest that Na2PtCl5 (quasi-)one-dimensional (q1D) compound with unusual chemistry and physical properties. Here, we propose extending the chemistry of ternary noble metal – sodium – chlorine compounds by systematic investigation of Pt-Na-Cl and Au-Na-Cl systems by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) at ID15b and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy (XANES) at ID12.
