Galaxy Homogeneity Comparison Using Matched Null Models: SDSS, DESI, and 2dFGRS

Version 3 — Retrospective reassessment This version records the outcome of a retrospective reassessment of the galaxy-homogeneity analysis previously published in Versions 1 and 2. The original catalogue-level numerical calculations can be reproduced, including the reported DESI and 2dFGRS crossing behaviour under the original analysis construction. However, subsequent end-to-end testing does not support the stronger interpretation of these results as evidence for a robust common physical transition near 33.3 Mpc. The reassessment applied aligned population rules and estimators, selection-function-aware null catalogues, frozen crossing and slope definitions, genuinely disjoint sky-region tests, and a dedicated investigation of the apparent transition across the radius grid. The apparent transition was found to depend materially on analysis construction. Its inferred location changes with grid phase and resolution, and comparable transition-like behaviour occurs frequently in appropriate synthetic/null catalogues. The evidence therefore does not establish a survey-independent physical transition at 33.3 ± 0.5 Mpc. The historical Versions 1 and 2 are retained unchanged as part of the scientific record. Version 3 supersedes their interpretation of the reported crossing as a robust common physical transition. This version is provided to preserve a transparent audit trail between the original result and the subsequent controls that changed its interpretation.
