Remediation and Redevelopment - Sediment Engineering Control Caps

A polygon representing the boundary of an engineering control (i.e., cap) placed over contaminated sediment. Engineering controls do not include sediment covers. Additional information about caps and covers for residual contaminated sediments is included in Guidance on Addressing Contaminated Sediment Sites in Wisconsin (RR-0124). A sediment engineering control cap is an engineering control (Wis. Stat. § 292.01(3m)) that creates a physical, chemical or a combination of physical and chemical isolation barrier that prevents contaminants in sediment from releasing to surface water and causing adverse impact to the environment and human health. Sediment caps are mapped using polygons to fully delineate the sediment engineering control caps and to inform data users of the extent of the caps where caution and additional steps may be required so that disturbance can be avoided. Disturbance could be caused by dredging work, utility work, bridge projects, riparian owners, or other projects. These engineering control caps are associated with other activities tracked by the RR Program. The responsible party provides the exact locations for new caps that are shown in this layer.
