Digital preservation risk assessment in institutional repositories: a typology-based analysis of digital objects

This dataset contains the results of an analysis of document types in 32 European repositories and the corresponding levels of risk assumed by the producing institution with regard to their digital preservation.

The file contains five tables. The “Repositories” table identifies the sample of repositories analyzed with the following data: OpenDOAR id, country of origin code and repository name.

Table “Normalization rules” in the dataset defines the rules used for grouping entries in the list of document types. When the value of the field type in the metadata record matches a rule, the new value is assigned. In this sense we group all contents into a set of 18 types

Table “Content types” in the dataset contains the distribution of digital objects by standardized document type. There is a high number of documents for which it has not been possible to define a document type, and these have been left as ‘unknown’. In one specific repository, 49% of the records could not be classified.

The second part of the study involved assigning a risk level to each digital object in accordance with the definition of risk levels described in the previous section. This data is available in the dataset in the ‘Risk assessment’ table. The identifier of the repository analyzed according to OpenDOAR was recorded, along with the number of digital objects for each document type. Risk indicators defined for each repository were calculated on the basis of this data.
