Cypress stand regeneration and regeneration in the Cryptomeria man-made forest by row thinning at Chilan Mt. area (2/5)

Different row thinning regimes are practiced on Cryptomeria (Cryptomeria japonica) plantations in Chilan Shan area. The patches formed after row thinning are treated by different man-made disturbances, i.e. site preparation without planting, site preparation and planting cypress seedlings, site preparation and scattering cypress seeds and without preparation (control) to explore the natural regeneration of cypress seedlings or other species seedlings. In the meanwhile, we will monitor the dynamics of cypress stands that were established from old growth cypress stands by selective cutting and site preparation and Cryptomeria plantation stands. The results could provide the science basis for restoring cypress stands from Cryptomeria plantations by natural succession and different man-made disturbance methods. Adaptive management strategies were applied to approach the forest ecosystem management, restoration and preservation of cypress forest.
