Dataset of controlled laboratory measurements of dune erosion under variable waves, water levels and dune moisture content

A full description of this data set is available in a publication titled: "Controlled laboratory measurements of dune erosion under variable waves, water levels and dune pore-moisture". This dataset contains controlled laboratory measurements of unvegetated dune erosion under vary waves, water levels, and initial dune moisture contents. Three different water levels in the wave flume with respect to the initial dune toe, two increasingly energetic irregular wave conditions, and three initial dune pore-moisture contents were explored. In total, twenty-nine (29) tests were conducted in a 36m long by 1.6m high and 0.9m wide wave flume. A wide range of instrumentation were deployed to measure the morphodynamic and groundwater dynamics of the dune face on a wave-to-wave basis as it eroded. Bathymetry, dune and foreshore morphology, offshore and onshore wave conditions, wave runup, water table and volumetric water content data within the dune were recorded across all tests, as well as video footage for qualitative purposes. This combined dataset can be used to: 1) explore nearshore morphodynamic processes under varied forcing conditions, 2) elucidate dune face erosion and failure mechanisms tying the observed erosion to internal groundwater dynamics and external wave and water level forcing, and 3) validate numerical models of dune erosion processes. Description of the datasets and Folder Structure The following 7 datasets are provided: 1. Sediment Characteristics 2. Wave Data 3. Bathymetric Data 4. LIDAR Data 5. Groundwater Data 6. Pore-Moisture Data 7. Experiment Videos The instrumentation locations for each dataset are recorded in a .csv file within the corresponding data folder. The origin of the co-ordinate system used to locate each instrument is the cross-shore location of the initial uneroded dune toe for the x-coordinate and the base of the wave flume for the y-coordinate. Experimental videos from the front have been uploaded for a qualitative view of the experiments. All files are labelled Txx, representing the xx test. MATLAB codes to process raw data is present in the RAW folder for each dataset. Individual README files are included in each folder where data is present detailing the file descriptions and abbreviations.
