As a contaminant with high toxicity and bio-magnification effects, mercury (especially methylmercury) in seawater can lead to health risks to high trophic level marine animals and people who feed on these animals. By understanding the vertical distribution of mercury species in seawater, we can improve our knowledge on sources of mercury to marine organisms.
