The Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is an exclusive maritime jurisdiction zone established by a coastal State in the waters that lie beyond and adjacent to its territorial sea. The coastal State holds the rights to explore, exploit, utilize, conserve and manage natural resources in the seabed, subsoil and their overlying waters, as well as the rights regarding the construction and operation of artificial facilities, scientific research, environmental protection and other related matters. The 2000 global marine EEZ dataset, developed and refined by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), provides researchers in relevant disciplines including physical geography and biological environment with the area and distribution details of marine EEZs.
