The objectives of our study were (1) to characterize the phylogenetic diversity of the gastrointestinal microbiota of the SUS and RES males fed a regular (control) diet, using 454 pyrosequencing after amplification for V3-V5 region of bacterial 16S rRNA gene, (2) to characterize the cecal microbiota diversity of the SUS and RES males fed the control diet dosed with cholesterol (0.5% w/w) using the same pyrosequencing procedure, and (3) to identify gut bacteria that are key to each of the four treatment groups (SUS/control diet, RES/control diet, SUS/cholesterol diet, RES/cholesterol diet) and to examine the association of these bacteria with the development of atherosclerosis.
