8 images. Helicopter to hospital ship demonstration, 27 August 1951. First time helicopter lands patient on a hospital ship, the U.S.S. "Consolation"; Major W.E. Abblitt (United States Marine Corps); William Voegel (hospital man volunteer patient).; Supplementary material reads: "Gershon. City desk. Illus. For first time Helicopter lands 'patient' on deck of Hospital Ship. Navy tried out plan after erecting a landing deck on stern of Hospital Ship Consolation. Test where made off Los Angeles Harbor. Helicopter was flown by Major W. E. Abblitt, United States Marine Corps, of Costa Mesa. 'Patient' was volunteer crew member Hospitalman Third Class William Voegel, of Patterson, New Jersey. Plan is to fly wounded men from battlefields to ship where full hospital facilities are available. Other hospital ships will be rigged as soon as they are available to shipyards. Various shots show helicopter making landing, one shot from air and two shots show corpsman rushing 'patient' away from helicopter after landing".
