Northern Virginia Wildland-Urban Interface Atlas, 1990-2020

Wildland-urban interface classification of every 2020 census block in the nine Northern Virginia jurisdictions at four decadal epochs (1990, 2000, 2010, 2020), derived from the SILVIS Lab 1990-2020 WUI change dataset (4th edition) and joined to a verified 495-station fire-suppression network. 27,886 sub-block polygons covering all 23,293 NoVA census blocks; 4,045 are WUI in 2020, holding 191,969 housing units. Northern Virginia runs opposite to the national trend: WUI housing grew 43.8 percent but the share of regional housing inside the WUI fell from 22.9 to 19.9 percent, and intermix blocks fell 61 percent as development converted them to dense interface or urban fabric.Produced by the Keystone GIS Northern Virginia Autonomous GIS Research Program.
