资源简介:
Practices of fitness and bodybuilding have become a visible feature of contemporary everyday life, positioning the gym not only as a site of physical training but also as a space where identity, relationships, and self-understanding are formed. In the Philippines, this dynamic is intensified by digital immersion, as social media circulates body ideals and popularizes the “gym rat” as a recognizable identity linked to discipline and bodily commitment. This study examines the gym as a culturally significant space in the construction of contemporary Filipino bodily identity through Lefebvre’s theory of the production of space, focusing on the interaction of perceived, conceived, and lived spaces. The study employs an empirical phenomenological design using an open-ended questionnaire administered through an online survey, with participant meanings treated as first-order constructs and synthesized into second-order thematic clusters. Nine (9) male gym rat participants (ages 20–41) from varying gym types provided responses. Four areas of inquiry guided the analysis: (1) description of the gym and its role in building the body, discipline, and personhood; (2) gym experiences related to personhood and gender identity; (3) influence of fitness influencers and online content on body perception and discipline; (4) social relations and the formation of community among gym-goers. Findings indicate that Filipino gym rats experience the gym as a produced social space where discipline becomes embodied, body ideals are negotiated through peer and media cues, and community ties sustain motivation and belonging.
