Compound Text Stress in Responsive UI Components: Combining WCAG Text Spacing and Controlled Text Expansion

This dataset accompanies the study Compound Text Stress in Responsive UI Components: Combining WCAG Text Spacing and Controlled Text Expansion by Umberto De Palma. The study examines layout robustness in responsive web components subjected to controlled text expansion, WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.12 text-spacing overrides, and their combined application. The experiment covers 20 component implementations from four design systems: GOV.UK, NHS.UK, U.S. Web Design System (USWDS), and IBM Carbon. Each implementation was tested under 32 conditions, producing 640 browser renderings. Three layout failures were confirmed, all occurring at a viewport width of 320 CSS pixels and only under combined text expansion and WCAG spacing conditions. The deposited archive contains the experimental datasets, classification results, analysis metadata, protocol and supporting code. It excludes screenshots and third-party visual assets. The results are descriptive and do not establish a statistically significant interaction between the two stressors. The final experimental dataset was generated using protocol version 1.2.
