The valid specific name of the South American sea lion was controversial for many years since <em>Otaria flavescens</em> (Shaw, 1800) and <em>Otaria byronia</em> (de Blainville, 1820) were the disputing designations. The present database summarizes the use of both names in peer-reviewed papers obtain in Google Scholar for the period 2010-2020.
