Plant diversity surely determines insect diversity, but only moderate correlations have been observed between insect and plant species richness until Basset et al.'s (2012, Science 338: 1481-1484) unprecedentedly comprehensive sampling of a tropical forest finally demonstrated that plant species richness can accurately predict arthropod species richness. Here we applied a high-throughput pipeline to operationalize this result at landscape scale for improving estimates of global eukaryotic species diversity, for testing the determinants of tropical arthropod megadiversity, and for using vegetation data as an umbrella for insect diversity.
